You’ll also notice the city’s iconic ascensores, funiculars built in the late 1800s and early 1900s to help residents make their way up and down the steep hills. Declared national monuments, some still function today. For a completely different flavor, visit nearby Viña del Mar for a more resort-like locale, or travel to Chile’s dynamic capital of Santiago, which is about two hours southeast.

    • Around the World 2026 kailua kona

      Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

Kailua-Kona has two names because the locals refer to it as both Kailua and Kona. This laid-back approach to naming reflects the overall vibe here of going with the flow, probably because it is hard to get too wound up in paradise. This is a destination where you can roam a national park, swim or snorkel in the sea, and play a round of golf at one of three courses overlooking the ocean. Make your way inland to a coffee farm or check out Holualoa Village on the slopes of Mount Hualalai, where you can stroll through this quaint town to read historic markers and stop at one of the many art galleries, shops or cafés.
    • Around the World 2026 French Polynesia

      Nuku Hiva, French Polynesia

      March 19, 2026
Wild horses, centuries-old banyan trees, ceremonial sacrifice sites and a remote location far from the rest of French Polynesia – all of these combine to add an air of mystery to Nuku Hiva, the largest of the Marquesas Islands. Many flock to the coastal fishing grounds, famous for the large Chinese fishing nets that have been used for centuries. These cantilevered contraptions brought here ages ago by Chinese explorers have a mesmerizing up-and-down action that takes a fair amount of muscle to operate. • Around the World 2026 Granada Spain

      Granada (Motril), Spain

      June 4, 2026
While the beauty of the nearby rolling countryside and Sierra Nevada mountains is hard to match, Granada manages just fine with its spectacular Moorish architecture. Hundreds of years of rule by North African Muslims left an indelible influence most gloriously witnessed at the Alhambra, a stunning palace complex built in the forested hills with snowcapped peaks rising as a backdrop. While the palace is Granada’s most famous attraction, getting lost amidst the winding medieval streets and stumbling upon grand cathedrals is likewise appealing. South of Granada, the port of Motril was a sugarcane capital, so you’ll want to try the local rum.
    • Around the World 2026 Bordeaux France

      Bordeaux, France

      June 9-10, 2026
Along a curve in the Garonne River rises the iconic 18th-century architecture of Bordeaux, a brilliant unity of medieval roots, neoclassical style and urban planning so remarkably revitalized that half the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007. Stroll through this divine cityscape defined by its parchment-colored buildings and wide-open squares, the largest of which is the 30-acre Esplanade de Quinconces. The only thing that could draw you outside of a city this gorgeous would be wine regions as revered as Médoc and Saint-Émilion and the elegant countryside châteaux where you can taste these renowned vintages.
    • Around the World 2026 Isafjordur Iceland

      Isafjordur, Iceland

      June 24, 2026
Iceland’s northwest territory is known as the Westfjords, a rugged area that is as beautiful as it is sparsely populated. Though there are only about 2,600 residents, Isafjordur is the largest town in the area and the cultural center, so it has the best variety of shopping and dining in the region. As the town was built around the fishing industry, you’ll want to try the local seafood, and Tjoruhusid restaurant is an institution. There’s no set menu, just a buffet of whatever is fresh from the sea served family-style at long tables. Pull up a seat and make new friends before you explore the striking glacial landscapes that surround the town.

Even the most gushing superlatives fail to capture its dramatic beauty, especially at the ungodly Devil’s Throat, the largest cascade.
